Swiss watchmaker Swatch divided the original idea of the company, that one that revolutionized the market of the clocks with his bold and original designs. An associate looked to develop the vehicle that, according to them, also would revolutionize the market of the motorcar.
The elected one was Volkswagen and the idea was to construct a small car, of only two squares, extremely agile, insurance, equipped good, of easy parking and capably of moving both in city and in highway. After the denial of Volkswagen to take charge of the project, Swatch, it sold the idea to Mercedes and left that this one was developing the project. There was created of that time MCC SMART (Mike Compact Car Swatch Mercedes Art). After several prototypes, the Smart was presented officially in the Lounge of the Motorcar of Frankfurt of 1997. The welcome of the public was rather cold, in spite of it, Mercedes decided to go forward with the project.
The idea was really revolutionary, the small vehicle was measuring 2,5 meters long for 1,5 high one and of breadth, it was a two-seater cigar, his engine of 600 cc was overfed by a turbocharger and his sequential change of six relations was transmitting all the force of the engine to the rear axis. The Smart was a pure marketing, not only in his concept of car as such, but in his way of selling it. Nevertheless, the initial results of such a campaign were not the wished ones, the public saw the Smart as a too small and expensive car, and in the first months the sales were not reaching not for hint to what it was reckoning for Mercedes. It was clear that the career of the Smart was of fund, Mercedes insisted with the publicity and little by little the small vehicle was doing a place to itself, many companies elected it as a share-out vehicle for his originality and under consumption, in the end the Smart ended up by becoming fashionable.
