History of Skoda

The Czech manufacturer, who today visits our blog dedicated to the engine, is characterized for constructing sober, robust and economic models. At present Skoda perhaps is the signature with better relation quality / price of the market, after being absorbed by the German Group Volkswagen.

The Skoda origins enough is necessary to look for them before the date of his foundation and in two different companies, Laurin Klement, who was devoting himself to the bicycles construction from 1899 and who began to construct cars in 1906, and ASSZ (Akcieva Spolecnot Skodovy Zavody), a powerful corporative group that they were devoting themselves to the armament. When ASSZ decided to enter the world of the motorcar, he bought Laurin Klement and his plant placed in Czechoslovakia.

Before being absorbed, Laurin and Klement made the best and most wished cars of the East, this cost him to open delegations in all the western countries. One year, after being bought by ASSZ, the cars that it was making received the name of Skoda. In 1933 there appeared the first pure Skoda, the Type 430, with engine of four cylinders, frame of central beam and suspension of oscillating axes. 430 it was breaking with traditionally made by Laurin and Klement and he supposed a big success of sales. Thanks to him, Skoda increased his scale with models like the Popular one, the Rapid and the Superb with engine of six cylinders.

After the second big warlike conflict, Czechoslovakia stayed in the area of influence of the USSR, and Skoda happened of making luxurious cars to more modest and robust models for imposition of the planned economic policy of the Soviet giant. A new factory was constructed in Mlada Boleslav and there bottoms kept on constructing Spartan vehicles with engine and haulage until middle of the 80. In 1987 the Favorit designed by Bertone appeared and with front haulage, this model supposed an inflection point for the mark. Skoda was capable of making cars very similar to those of the rest of Occident.

When the wall of Berlin fell down, Skoda turned into target of several car groups. In the end it was the German group Volkswagen who took charge of the mark in 1990.

Thanks to the technology of Volkswagen, Skoda, he lived through the second youth. The throwing of Octavia and of Fabia with German engines supposed a big success of sales and allowed to increase the production up to 350.000 cars at the end of the 90. The quality of the Skoda has grown in an exponential way, leaving this reputation of Spartan and mediocre, now there keep on being cars robust but loaded with technology and at very interesting prices.
