The company was founded in 1954 after absorbing the company Hadongwahn Motor. His first creations were commercial vehicles as trucks and buses. In 1986, after the buy of the manufacturer of luxurious vehicles and jeeps under license Keohwa Motors, it is when it takes the name of SsangYong Motor Company.
SsangYong realizes a strong investment in research and development of motorcars and in 1988 gathers his fruits with the presentation of the Korando, the first SUV made entirely of Korea. This alliance helped SsangYong to develop light commercial vehicles, diesel engines and luxurious cars. At the end of 2004 the Chinese group Shanghai Automotivates Industry Corporation he bought 49 % of the actions of SsangYong.
